A Message from the Principal

Greetings,

Welcome to the final term of the the 2011-2012 school year. We are very proud of how our girls stayed focused and worked hard to do their best on the New York state ELA and Math exams; the way in which we came together as a community in the weeks prior to the exam undoubtedly helped them in their efforts.

One such program that supported our girls is the Math Leaders, started by Ms. Bryngelson, our physical education teacher. In her own words:

I want our ladies at Brighter Choice to never be in the situation of not knowing basic math facts.  I want them to leave this school feeling empowered with the knowledge they have acquired; I want them to have the ability to go out in this world and conquer any situation, no matter how big or small. The ladies were tested weekly on their basic math facts in all operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  The goal was for ladies to show improvement after 6 weeks of the program.  During this time, flash cards were created, extra time for practice was allotted not only in their core courses, but in their specials classes as well.  And the results were amazing: at the conclusion of the program, over 90% of students showed improvement from the first week and 29 students became “Math Leaders.”
